Why Delaying Gratification is a Must for Kids

One skill I’m proud to say my mum instilled in me from an early age was to work hard at achieving something. If I wanted to go to a friend’s place for the weekend, I had to help out around the house during the week so I had the weekend free. If I wanted to meet someone at a certain place it needed to be organised in advance as there weren’t mobile phones to change plans at the last second.

There was no such thing as ‘instant access’ to anything. A reward usually came after a lot of hard work. What I didn’t realise at the time was I was learning how to delay gratification, something that has served me well for many of my adult years. However, instilling this in my kids has been somewhat challenging as it’s not necessarily what their friends are doing.

Delayed gratification is essentially putting off something pleasurable now, in order to gain something more rewarding later. How many times have you asked your child not to snack before dinner, so they eat their entire meal? This is a great example of delayed gratification. In fact, every time we help our kids wait that little bit longer, they are learning valuable life lessons.

Benefits of Delayed Gratification

Other ways we can help teach our kids how to delay their desires on a daily basis might include helping out around the house before relaxing, saving their pocket money or even teaching them to wait before speaking instead of interrupting a conversation.

Is delaying gratification something you encourage with your kids?
